Zendaya is set to portray Aaliyah in an upcoming Lifetime movie. The network has named the 17-year-old Disney star and “Dancing With The Stars” alum as the lead in its latest biopic Aaliyah: Princess of R&B.
Deadline.com says the movie will premiere in the fall, and will cover Aaliyah’s rise to fame and her tragic death at age 22. Princess of R&B will be based on the book Aaliyah: More Than A Woman, written by Time music editor Christopher Farley. Zendaya is also set to record four of Aaliyah’s songs to be used in the TV movie.
The casting news comes just weeks after Lifetime announced plans for a movie about another beloved late singer. It’s working on a biopic about Whitney Houston, which will be directed by Angela Bassett.
