Police are questioning a man from Texas who crashed on the northbound Dan Ryan Expressway, killing a 4-year-old boy who was thrown from the SUV, authorities said.
Franklin Jackson Jr. was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital after being found near the crash scene at 87th Street a little after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The boy was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The boy had been riding in a blue and gray Ford Expedition when it veered from the middle lane to the far right lane and twice hit the guardrail, state police said in a release. The back window was shattered and the boy was ejected, authorities said.
The driver continued on to 83rd Street, where he stopped to check the damage and discovered the boy was missing, a source said. Emergency crews found the boy unresponsive on an embankment and the distraught 46-year-old driver at 83rd Street, the source said.
Also in the SUV were a 1-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, a 3-month-old girl and a 23-year-old woman. All of them were wearing seat belts except the 4-year-old, state police said.
