Johnny “Koolout” Starks has been upgraded from fair to good condition at Vidant Medical Center as of Wednesday morning, a hospital official told NewsChannel 12. Starks is a radio personality for 101.9 Kiss FM, a Hip Hop and R&B station based in New Bern.
Friends and co-workers at the radio station have identified Starks as being involved in the wreck Tuesday morning at the intersection of Washington Post Road and Spring Garden Road, northwest of New Bern.
According to the Highway Patrol, Starks ran a red light and crashed his Kiss FM van into a tractor-trailer that was making a left turn into Washington Post Road.
A semi truck accident attorney is working on the case as charges are pending, said investigators. The driver of the tractor-trailer appeared to be okay.
NewsChannel 12 spoke with a co-worker of Koolout– DJ Jay Blaze, who hopes Koolout will have a speedy recovery. Blaze said he and others have visited Koolout at the hospital, and are keeping him in their prayers.
“We’re just happy he’s okay. And we’re going to pray for him and hope he gets better soon,” said Blaze. “Koolout is a real good guy, hard worker, here on time everyday, works super hard, is dedicated to the community and real a upstanding good dude. Salute to everybody going out and showing love to him and, you know, everybody for their prayers.”
