CHICAGO HEIGHTS – A newborn girl who was two or three hours old was found in a field alongside residential and commercial buildings in Chicago Heights Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Police received a 911 call around 11 a.m. Tuesday from a person who claimed they had discovered an “unattended newborn lying in the grass in an open field.” Officers located the baby girl in the field about 100 feet west of 19460 Chicago Heights-Glenwood Rd. Paramedics were called and took the responsive infant to the hospital where she’s in good condition. Officials say the baby is a black female who was born two to three hours prior to being found.

Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers says detectives are investigating and trying to find the baby’s family. He said in his experience children get left behind when a mother is scared and possibly no other family members know about her pregnancy.

“There’s a safe-haven law and a lot of new mothers don’t know about this,” Rogers said.

Under the law, a newborn up to 30 days old can be dropped off at a police station, fire station, or hospital with no questions asked. Rogers said getting the mother medical help is his top priority.

Police are seeking any information on the whereabouts of the baby’s mother or any other family member. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at (708) 756-6422.
