JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) –
A Judge has denied bond to teens accused of rape, carjacking, and kidnapping a 29-year-old. Thirteen year-old Remy Harvey and 16-year-old Eddie Devine appeared in Jackson municipal court Monday morning.
Both now face charges of kidnapping, armed carjacking, sexual assault, rape, and aggravated assault, and will likely face additional charges in connection with two other incidents.
Those charges include rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and auto theft.
JPD Officer Colendula Green said a black 2014 Dodge Avenger was carjacked sometime after 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The incident happened at the Hallmark Gardens Apartments on Northside Drive.
The suspects, Harvey and Devine, were spotted at a convenience store on North State Street.
The stolen vehicle was found on Lorenz Boulevard.
A witness saw the incident and called police. The 29-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital.
Judge June Hardwick, the mother of a 13 year old herself, presided over their initial appearance. She made it clear to the teens that they could face lifelong consequences for their actions.
Eddie Divine broke down in tears at his fathers side as the charges were read.
Remy Harvey remained expressionless. Not one of his family members showed up for his appearance.
Judge Hardwick said, “Because of this arrest you may not be able to be an attorney one day if you’re convicted, you may not be able to become an attorney and thats something you want to be. The other wants to be a brick mason, well you may be able to be a brick mason as an inmate in the department of corrections.”
“I believe that if young people had a better understanding of what prison looks like, missing funerals birthdays, graduations, Easter egg hunts etc, that maybe they would not put themselves in positions where they will be arrested for any felony offense,” said Judge Hardwick.
