Search warrants filed in Hennepin County last Friday reveal the chaotic series of events that took place after a one-year-old child was found hanging from a noose in the basement of a home day care in Minneapolis.

A man was dropping off his child at day care on the 2700 block of Humboldt Avenue South on Friday morning when he noticed the day care provider, identified as 42-year-old Natalia Karia, was not “acting right,” according to the documents. He told police Karia said she had “done something bad.”

The man said he heard a child crying in the basement and ran downstairs, where he found a child hanging from a noose. He grabbed the child and ran home.

Karia fled the scene in her minivan. She hit one pedestrian on Grand Avenue South and bicyclist at the intersection of 28th Avenue South and Park Avenue South. Both victims suffered serious injuries.

Fox 9 spoke with the bicyclist, Jacob Corrigan, on Monday. He said he was biking to his job at the Herbivorous Butcher in northeast Minneapolis when he noticed the minivan coming towards him.

“It almost felt like a magnet,” he said. “I thought maybe the brakes were out or something, they didn’t stop.”

Karia then attempted to jump off the Park Avenue bridge over I-94, but witnesses stopped her and held her at the scene until police arrived. She was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she remains “unresponsive,” the documents say. Police say once she is released she will be booked into the Hennepin County Jail.

Corrigan said he feels compassion towards Karia. He said it is pretty clear the driver was in a distressed state on Friday and hopes she gets the help she needs.

There are a few months of recovery ahead for Corrigan. He will likely return to work within eight to 10 weeks and will be back to his normal, active lifestyle in three months.

The child was taken to the hospital, but is expected to survive.

The incident remains under investigation.
