Tameka “Tiny” Harris assured her fans and critics that her recent decision to alter her eye color had nothing to do with self-hate.
“People are saying I must have low self-esteem, but if you really know me, I have no problems in the self-esteem department,” Tiny told People.com.
Tiny explained that she flew to Africa to have her eye color lightened from brown to ice gray because the procedure is illegal in the United States. She believes that time, effort and money was worth it. According to People.com, the surgery, which takes about 30 minutes, is $10,000.
While the new look may have caught some of Tiny’s fans off guard, she said she’s been considering having her eyes lightened for years.
“A friend of mine mentioned that she had heard of a procedure where you could permanently change your eye color and we looked into it. We researched it for a bit but I was nervous because…it’s your eyes!” she said. “Two years later it came up again. I spoke to the doctors and to patients who’d had it. I learned that there was no downtime, that it only took about 15 minutes — plus it’s reversible. When I found out that you could reverse it, I was sold.”
While she’s received a lot of criticism for the cosmetic surgery, Tiny compared it to other enhancements that women have done in the doctor’s office.
“I just wanted to do something different, and I have the right to do that. It’s my body,” she told “Good Morning America.”
“You have to do what makes you happy. As long as you’re being healthy and safe, just do what makes you feel good,” she told People.com.
So far, Tiny said she’s not experienced any negative side effects from the procedure, and while he had to get used to the idea, Tiny said her husband, T.I., is fine with her new look.
“He loves them. He’s okay with them as long as they’re healthy and I’m not having any problems,” she said.
