Munich police said it was not yet clear whether there were multiple shooters after some witnesses reported three gunmen.
The police closed off a wide area around the Munich Olympia shopping center and urged people to stay indoors, saying a large police operation was underway.
”Many shots were fired, I can’t say how many but it’s been a lot,” an employee at the mall who asked not to be identified told Reuters, saying that staff were still hiding in the storage rooms. “All the people from outside came streaming into the store and I only saw one person on the ground who was so severely injured that he definitely didn’t survive.”
Witnesses posted images and live video on social media of people fleeing the scene and a large police operation in the area.
Munich authorities closed several bus, train and tram lines in the city as police hunted for suspects.
