Historic: President Obama Comes to Aid of Black Boys

President Obama promised to use his pen and phone to make 2014 a year of action and he is strongly becoming a man of his word.

On Thursday, the President will unveil a groundbreaking, new plan between the federal government and some of the country’s leading  foundation leaders, corporate executives, civil rights and community leaders  to unify the entire country’s efforts to help alleviate the social ills that continue to impact young men of color, particularly Black boys.

The initiative is called, “My Brother’s Keeper,” where those in the private and public sectors along with the Obama administration will work together to identify and resolve some of the key challenges that face these young men. For example, according to a 2012 report from the Schott Foundation only 52% of Black males graduate from high school in four years nationally compared to 78% of White, non-Latino males.

White House sources indicate that the initiative will have two parts starting with implementing certain strategies nationwide that will focus on the most important moments of these boy’s lives, catching them before they become susceptible to the criminal elements that engulf many of their communities.

Then the President will support a bipartisan federal effort to evaluate results and evidence and determine what works and what doesn’t.

This is the first time any presidential administration has earmarked a dedicated response to young men of color.
