Nine people were found shot to death early Friday in at least four crime scenes in a small community in south central Missouri, according to local media reports.
Texas County Sheriff James Sigman told theHouston Herald Friday that as many as six crime scenes may be involved in the shootings in an area around the unincorporated community of Tyrone, but would not elaborate.
The dead included the apparent shooter whose body was found in adjoining Shannon County, according to KY3 news. The Herald says the body was found in a parked car.
According to the newspaper, a neighbor near one of the crime scenes reported that authorities came to the door at 3:45 a.m. checking for fatalities or injured individuals.
Residents at one house were told to stay inside and not open the door to strangers, the newspaper said.
The Herald added that the staff at the school district in the small town of Houston, Mo., nearby had been told to arrive early for counseling sessions. There were no further details on why the measures were being taken.
Sigman told the newspaper that a Missouri State Highway Patrol had set up a mobile command post in the area and would hold a news briefing at mid-morning.
