Body of South Carolina Man Vanished 16 Years Ago Was Found Submerged In Lake Still In The Seat Of His Chevy

The body found in a car that was submerged in a lake is a South Carolina plant worker who vanished 16 years ago, authorities said. John Henry Dubose, of Calhoun Falls, had been missing since September 2000.

He was last seen driving the white Chevrolet he was found in.

His family reported Dubose, then 31, missing after they did not see him for days and he failed to show up for work at Mohawk Industries Rocky River Plant, the Greenwood Index-Journal reported.

At the time, investigators searched the lake after leads suggested he might have been suicidal.

But on Saturday, his car – a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica – was recovered near the Beer Garden boat ramp on Lake Russell in Calhoun Falls.

A fisherman had spotted something on his depth finder, the Index-Journal reported.

A dive team later pulled the vehicle from around 17 feet of water.

Dry weather had made the water level lower than usual, meaning the vehicle could be better seen, Fox Carolina reports.

The Abbeville County Coroner’s Office identified the skeletal remains found in the front seat as Dubose during an autopsy on Monday.

However, a cause of death remains unknown and an investigation by authorities is ongoing.

Dubose was identified using dental records, Deputy Coroner Ronda Nance.

But Arlene Dubose, the victim’s niece, said that when her family saw the car pulled from the lake, they immediately knew it was their relative.  She paid tribute to her uncle, describing him as a hard-working and loving father and husband.

It does provide some closure, but there are still questions,’ she told the Index-Journal.

Her family will have to wait for further testing to be done and toxicology results to know more.  However, the coroner’s office said the autopsy did not show signs of trauma.
