A Baton Rouge-based pastor was arrested Friday after a 12-year-old girl said he raped her twice on his bed last year.

The girl came to the attention of authorities in April when she turned up at a New Orleans hospital, writing and drawing pictures about an alleged sexual assault by 56-year-old Darrell Ranel, of 2115 Cunard Ave., Baton Rouge.

“The victim was very talkative except when the interviewer asked her about the Defendant,” the arrest warrant says. After initially avoiding conversation about the assault, the girl “asked if she could write down what happened to her.”

Ranel is accused of asking the girl to help him clean his bedroom, later pushing her onto his bed and forcing her to take off her clothes. On two occasions sometime in the summer of 2014, when the girl was 11, Ranel allegedly raped her and threatened to hurt her if she didn’t comply. The girl said Ranel had been in a relationship with her mother and was a pastor, the affidavit says.

According to public employment records and one of his Facebook pages, Ranel is director of the Black Creek African Methodist Episcopal Church of Darlington.

He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on two counts of aggravated rape.
