Three teens announced they were going to rob a group of people standing on a street corner in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood before one of the teens fatally shot 15-year-old Kimon Wheeler, according to court records.

Two of the accused teens, Aaron Bynum, 16, and Keon Frazier, 15, appeared in Cook County Bond Court Sunday afternoon in blue Juvenile Temporary Detention Center t-shirts and sweatpants for a bond hearing Sunday afternoon.

Kimon was hanging out with two cousins and five others outside a convenience store in the 4100 block of West Cullerton Street just before 11 p.m Wednesday when he was killed, Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr said. Relatives said after the killing that Kimon was hanging out with his cousins that night, and witnesses said a group of young people had been having a Roman candle fight on the block before the would-be robbers approached the group.

One in the group knew Bynum from school, according to court records.

The three teens walked up to the group and Frazier asked “what everyone was about,” according to court records. Frazier later pulled out a gun, pointed it at the group, and told everyone not to move. He told Bynum and the other teen he planned to rob the group, according to records.

The group scattered, but Kimon didn’t run, according to Karr. But when Kimon turned to flee, he was shot, according to police. Frazier fired the gun multiple times, and Kimon was hit twice, once in the upper arm and once on the right side of the chest, according to court records.

Kimon, of the 2100 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Bynum’s attorney, Steve Fine, denied the allegations. Bynum’s guardian and three other relatives stood in court to hear the allegations against him.

Bynum’s bond was set at $900,000, while Frazier’s was set at $1 million.

Both are scheduled to be back in court Monday.

Because the third accused teen is 14, he will appear for hearing in Juvenile Court before having a bond hearing in Criminal Court.

Relatives said last week that Kimon, who was set to attend Proviso East High School in Maywood this fall, liked mathematics and dancing.
