An Oklahoma man valiantly shot and killed a man who was trying to drown his own 3-month-old twins, reports The Ada News.

Police say Leland Foster (pictured above), 27, forced his way into the home where his infant children were, and attempted to kill them. The babies’ mother pleaded for help in a frantic call to police while Foster kept her from reaching her children with a knife while he held the infants under water in a bathtub.

Ada Public Information Director Lisa Bratcher told the newspaper the call came in around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The 12-year-old granddaughter of the homeowner whose home Foster was in ran to a neighbor’s house to get help. The neighbor, Cash Freeman, reportedly grabbed a loaded revolver and rushed to help the mother of the twins.

When he reached the scene, he fired two shots at Foster, killing him on the spot.

The infants were given to Mercy EMS paramedics who rushed them to Mercy Hospital Ada. The twins, a boy and girl who were born prematurely, were then transferred to an Oklahoma City Hospital where they remained in stable condition and were doing well as of Friday, according to Bratcher.

Freeman was taken for questioning by police and later released. Bratcher says the district attorney’s office will perform an inquiry into the man’s actions and will make a decision on whether or not the shooting was justified and if he will face charges.
An autopsy and toxicology screening will be performed on Foster’s body by the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine if Foster was under the influence of any intoxicants or narcotics when he attacked the mother and his children.

An investigation is still ongoing, and police have yet to ascertain a motive for Foster’s actions.

According to KFOR, Foster pleaded to no contest charges of domestic abuse by strangulation and arson in the first degree in 2011.

KFOR spoke with Freeman about the incident, who said he believes he did what needed to be done, but he’s concerned he may face charges for his actions.
