President Barack Obama is set to visit the federal prison in El Reno, Oklahoma this week. Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick happens to be among the 1,300 inmates who live there.
Obama will be the first sitting president to make such a visit, the White House says.
The president’s Thursday visit to the federal correctional institution in El Reno, Oklahoma comes days after he pardoned 46 prisoners who faced long sentences for drug crimes.
Earlier this year, Kilpatrick’s family said they would seek a presidential pardon for the disgraced former mayor.
During appearances this week and last, Obama has spoken about the need to reform the nation’s criminal justice system.
In October of 2013, Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison for his convictions on racketeering, bribery, extortion, mail and wire fraud, and tax crimes.
The federal Bureau of Prisons shows Kilpatrick’s release date as August 1, 2037. That calculates to about 24 years, because BOP officials say it is standard practice to include a prisoner’s time served along with his projected credit for Good Conduct Time (GCT).
If Kilpatrick doesn’t maintain “clear conduct,” his release date would become March 10, 2041.
