The Philadelphia Eagles announced via Twitter today that wide receiver DeSean Jackson has been cut from the team.
The move comes following weeks of speculation that the Eagles were trying to trade Jackson. Also, just prior to the announcement, NJ.com posted a story that alleged gang ties between Jackson and members of the Crips gang in Los Angeles, and a series of social media pictures fan the speculation.
Despite the rumored gang ties, Jackson has no arrests related to the incidents involved. In a statement, Jackson called any reports of gang affiliations “unfounded” and “misleading.”
“I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang,” Jackson said.
The seven-year wideout from California, a three-time Pro Bowler, caught 82 passes for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013.
The NJ.com story also accused Jackson of missed meetings and poor effort in practice. Cutting Jackson saves the Eagles $6.5 million against the salary cap. For his part, Jackson seems to be taking his release in stride; he posted this video on Instagram in the minutes after his release became public.
