An Atlanta woman saved her infant daughter’s life by hiding her in the toilet just before succumbing to a fatal gunshot wound.

Jessica Arrendale, 33, and boyfriend Antoine Davis, 30, went out for the night on September 13,WSB Radio reports.

Davis, a former Marine, became violently drunk and started assaulting Arrendale when they got home.

Arrendale’s mother, Teresa Ioniello, told WSB Radio that this had happened many times before, but her daughter and Davis stayed together.

He chased Arrendale up the stairs of her three-story house while she held their 6-month-old daughter, Cobie, in her arms.

Arrendale tried to use a baseball bat for defense, but Davis grabbed it and struck her, possibly hitting the child.

She then locked herself in a bathroom.

Davis broke down the door and shot Arrendale in the head with an assault rifle, the baby still in her arms.

Ioniello said,

He shot her and they (police) don’t know how she was able to twist her body and fall literally in the opposite direction.

Arrendale turned around to put Cobie in the toilet and then covered it with her body.

Cobie’s grandmother believes that Davis would have killed Cobie had he been able to see her.

Instead, he walked into Cobie’s room and shot himself.

Ioniello said,

She was the hero because her last breath was saving the child.

Cobie remained in the toilet for about 13 hours, her mother’s body still slumped over the bowl, before officers entered the home.

The baby was treated for hypothermia and a traumatic head injury.

She is currently staying at Children’s Health Care of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital.

Inniello, who already cares for Arrendale’s 15-year-old daughter, hopes to take Cobie home soon.

Davis’ two daughters from a previous marriage, ages 9 and 10, were also in the home for the murder-suicide.

Friends of Arrendale have set up a GoFundMe page to pay for Arrendale’s funeral as well an education for her two daughters.

Nearly $21,000 has been raised as of this afternoon.
