1 dead in accident on Bishop Ford Freeway

The crash occurred when a tire flew off of a car in the southbound lanes and hit another car in the northbound lanes, according to Illinois State Police. Major traffic backups are being reported.

A woman is dead following an accident this morning near 130th Street on the Bishop Ford Freeway, according to Illinois State police.

Shortly after 6 a.m., a tire fell off a green 1997 Chevrolet Blazer in the southbound lanes of the Bishop Ford and struck a white 2011 Nissan Versa that was in the northbound lanes, said police.

Preliminary reports said the tire bounced over to the northbound lanes and struck the Nissan head on.

A woman inside of the Nissan was seriously injured and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she was pronounced dead, said police.

As of 7:39 a.m., the woman’s identity was not being released pending family notification, said police.

As of 9:27 a.m., all northbound lanes on the Bishop Ford Freeway were reopened.
