Per 11 Alive, Authorities said suicide is suspected in the death of a man found hanging from a tree in Piedmont Park early Thursday.

Just before 5 a.m., police said security officers found the man hanging from a tree by a rope in Piedmont Park.

Grady EMS, Atlanta Police and the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office responded to the scene near the Charles Allen entrance.

When EMS arrived, they advised the man showed no signs of life, according to police.

Kim Jones with Atlanta police said there were no signs of foul play.

“There were no discernible signs of a struggle or foul play. The scene was consistent with a suicide.  Fulton County Medical Examiner Investigator Hagar responded and concurred that the death was consistent with a suicide,” Jones said in a release.

The victim is unidentified but police described him as a black male, 23 to 35 years old.

Official cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed released a statement after skepticism about the circumstances around the death arose. He said the “disturbing event demands our full attention” and that the case has been referred to the FBI.

“Everything we have seen suggests that there was no foul play involved, but I want to state clearly and unequivocally that we will not prejudge the situation. APD will share all evidence discovered in the course of the investigation. We ask for the public’s support and cooperation as we work to resolve this matter,” he added.
