An undercover Tennessee agent was killed during a drug deal gone bad.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that De’Greaun Frazier had been shot dead Tuesday afternoon during an operation in the western city of Jackson.
TBI said that Frazier had set up a drug buy and was sitting in the front seat of an SUV when a suspect in the backseat pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the agent.
Both Frazier, a 35-year-old who joined the agency earlier this year, and another man with him in the car were shot.
There was no immediate information on whether the suspect knew that Frazier was law enforcement, TBI spokesman Josh Devine told the Daily News.
He is the first agent killed in the line of duty for TBI, which was established in 1980.
A suspect was taken into custody near the scene, and TBI director Mark Gwyn said at a news conference that the unidentified man will likely be charged with murder.
