Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said a person of interest in the murder of a 2-year-old boy in the city’s Little Village neighborhood was taken into custody Wednesday evening by state police and FBI agents in Kankakee County following a traffic stop.

The boy was found unresponsive about 1:55 p.m. in the 2700 block of South Avers, according to Chicago Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified him as Mateo Garcia Aguayo.

“I saw a young man was running around here looking for some kind of help, and then I approached him, you know, in order to see what’s going on. He told me that he couldn’t talk because he was shaking a lot. So he asked if we could call the police or something,” said Rafael Abrago, neighborhood resident.

Chicago police said the toddler suffered severe trauma from laceration, and fatal stab wounds. ABC7 Eyewitness News was told he may have been found in a bag.

Area Central detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, police said. The person of interest is believed to be a male family member, but police have not released any details about the person in custody.

“It’s very devastating. Very sad for anybody, any age to be murdered of anything. So I’m just devastated,” said Quenshoda Howard, neighbor.

Police have cordoned off the entire block, as well as an adjacent alley, as the search for the suspect continues.
