Two New York Students Allegedly Attempted To Poison Teacher With Rat Poison

students try to posion teacher An elementary school teacher is recovering after two children allegedly attempted to poison her Monday, police officials said Wednesday.

The students, 9 and 12, allegedly put rat-killing chemicals into the water bottle of a teacher at PS 315 in Brooklyn, New York. Both students have been arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon (the rat poison), reckless endangerment and attempted assault, various media outlets report.

“My understanding is the 9-year-old wanted to see what the reaction would be,” Police Commissioner William J. Bratton told The New York Times. “God knows where kids get these ideas.”

According to reports, another child witnessed the two suspects putting something in the teacher’s drink and told a parent. The teacher, who had already taken a sip by the time the parent notified the school, promptly went to the doctor and reported mild nausea.

News of the incident has rattled parents whose children attend the school.

“I think it’s horrible. I just heard about it, and I’m in shock. I’m shaking,” one parent told CBS local affiliate 1010 WINS. “I was thinking that the children are the future, and the future doesn’t seem too promising right now with these things happening in school.”

The New York Department of Education on Wednesday told local news outlets: “We are greatly relieved that the teacher is recovering and we continue to closely monitor this situation. Ensuring the safety of our entire schools community is our priority, and while this matter is still under investigation, we will take swift and appropriate action.”
