Chicago police say a 9-year-old boy was fatally shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the city’s South Side.

Police say they can not rule out that he was targeted.

The boy was shot Monday afternoon in the head and back not far from his grandmother’s home in the 2000 block of West 80th Place, authorities say.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said the boy was pronounced dead after emergency responders arrived at the scene.

Chief of Detectives Constantine Andrews said late Monday that prior to the shooting, an unknown number of individuals were in the alley where the boy’s body was found. They left the scene after the shooting.

“It’s unclear if this was a targeted incident or a tragic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Andrews said.

Authorities say no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
