Birmingham police have charged a 19-year-old with his mother’s murder after her burned remains were found in an abandoned apartment on Sunday.
Jonathan Pitts is accused of killing his mother, 41-year-old Cheryl Harrell.
Police said a man called them around 7:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, wanting to file a missing person’s report for his girlfriend. They responded to the 1000 block of Sunhill Road to investigate.
While officers were there, a witness was looking for the missing woman and found what appeared to be burned human remains inside one of the abandoned apartments on Sunhill Road.
Harrell appeared to have been severely burned and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Pitts is being held on a $150,000 bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
