4-year-old girl was seriously injured when the front porch roof of a single-family home collapsed on her in the South Shore neighborhood this evening, authorities said.
The girl was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Comer Children’s Hospital following the collapse about 5:50 p.m. in the 1600 block of East 74th Place, said Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva. One adult who was examined by paramedics declined to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Neighbors told WGN-TV that when the roof collapsed onto the girl and neighbors rushed up to help the girl’s mother and other family dig her out, she at first wasn’t responding. But once she realized she was out from under the debris, she began crying, and her mother was able to go with her to the hospital.
