Romeoville, IL Teen On Way To Park Suffers “Strange” Injury

A local teen was taking a short cut while riding his bike in southwest suburban Romeoville when he was knocked to the ground and his throat was cut.

Sergio Perez, 13, said the deep cut across his neck happened after a neighbor used a thin rope to block off a common area behind his home – a rope residents said was put there to keep kids out.

Perez was riding his bike down the hill behind his home Tuesday afternoon when he hit the tight rope.

“Suddenly I felt a pull on my neck because I think I knew that there was going to be a rope on the floor, but I didn’t know it was going to be up on the fence,” Perez said.

The rope cut Perez’s neck and knocked him out.

“I blacked out for a little and then I screamed, I was like mom, mom. I didn’t know what to do after that,” said Perez in an interview with FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

“It was really scary just seeing my son holding his neck, he could have lost his head,” said Naomi Perez, Sergio’s mother.

The Romeoville neighborhood is filled with school-aged children.

“This happened to my son but it could happen to other kids,” said Naomi, and she believes if her son was younger or smaller or riding his bike faster, he wouldn’t have survived.

Neighbor Eric Ratliff agrees.

“Sergio is a big kid, and you see how bad the cut is and could have been a lot worse if it was a smaller kid,” said Ratliff.

Ratliff lives across the street and was home when he heard the screaming.

“By the time I got over here towards the hill, I saw him make his way up holding his neck and I saw blood coming out of his mouth and that’s when she was saying, dial 9-1-1,” said Ratliff.

FOX 32 News asked the neighbor suspected of putting up the rope for comment. We were asked to leave her property.

FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis reports a police report was filed against the neighbor accused of tying the rope behind the homes. Will County States Attorney’s Office Spokesman Charles Pelkie said no charges have been filed, but they are reviewing the case.
