49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was fined $10,000 for wearing headphones during his postgame press conference last Sunday that are not sponsored by the NFL, he said Thursday.
Kaepernick, who appeared in a Beats by Dre commercial last year, wore pink headsets produced by the company around his neck after the 49ers’ 22-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kaepernick later posted a photo on Instagram of himself wearing the pink headphones with the caption, “I support breast cancer awareness! My grandma is a survivor!” October is breast cancer awareness month.
When asked if he or Beats by Dre would pay the fine, Kaepernick answered, “We’ll let that be unanswered.”
The NFL recently entered into a new sponsorship deal with Bose to provide all headsets used on sidelines during games.
Under terms of the league’s agreement with Bose, no other brand of headsets can be worn by players during TV interviews up to 90 minutes after games have ended.
