Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell will not mandate that his players stand during the national anthem.

“We’d see exactly what his thoughts were and are, but the fact of the matter is what we won’t do is we won’t mandate an action for him. We won’t tell him to stand up or tell him to sit down or whatever that might be, because obviously, he hasn’t done anything that’s against the law,” Caldwell told the media when asked how he’d handle a player wanting to sit out.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made shockwaves through the world of professional sports when he refused to stand for the national anthem. The dual-threat quarterback claims that he chose to sit in a protest over his belief that minorities are oppressed in America.

The backlash has been intense and severe against Kaepernick for his decision to sit, but he still has maintained that he will continue sitting during the anthem.
