NEW ORLEANS — An Orleans Parish inmate awaiting trial for murder will now spend the rest of his life behind bars because of a cell phone.
Under the habitual offender law, 39-year-old Keith Kisack was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.
Deputies discovered the cell phone in December 2011. The phone is considered contraband in the prison.
On the phone was a picture of Kisack and text messages between him and his then-attorney, New Orleans Councilman Jason Williams.
Kisack could still face trial on the murder charge if the district attorney’s office decides to prosecute him.
