Mother Stabbed To Death By Daughter After Disciplining Her For Making Pornographic Photos

A 14-year-old Warren girl was supposed to start high school classes Tuesday but instead appeared in a courtroom on accusations she stabbed and wounded her 33-year-old mother over the Labor Day weekend.

The girl, wearing a blue inmate jumpsuit, appeared in Macomb County Juvenile Court for a preliminary hearing on the allegation she stabbed her mother 12 times in reaction to being disciplined. Assistant Prosecutor Dana Chiamp told Referee George Keller her office intends to pursue an attempted murder charge.

Keller granted Chiamp’s request for a five business-day period to mull whether to charge the girl as an adult or a juvenile. The charge could be altered at the hearing, scheduled for next Tuesday at the Juvenile Court courthouse on North Rose Street. The adult penalty for attempted murder is up to life in prison.

The girl, represented by attorney Robert Vanhoutte, showed no emotion and barely responded to Keller’s questions. She was remanded to the Juvenile Justice Center without bond.

Her mother on Tuesday was in the intensive care unit at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit after being transferred from St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren and is expected to recover from her wounds, said police Detective Donald Seidl. The victim’s injuries were all to her upper body, including her head, back, shoulders, arms and chest.

“The main stab wound missed all major blood vessels and arteries,” Seidl said.

The incident took place between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Sunday at their home in south Warren, Seidl added. The girl stabbed her mother with a knife in the hallway, living room and near the front door, he said. The victim fled out the front door and went to the home of a neighbor, who called police. She was caught by police a short time later “a couple of blocks away.

“The mother was disciplining the child,” Seidl said. “The child went into a rage and attacked her mother with a knife multiple times.”

Seidl talked to the victim for only a short time in the hospital. The woman described her daughter as a “great kid” who has been an “A and B student” and “was looking forward” to starting school, according to Seidl.

The girl’s grandfather and aunt intended to attend the hearing and waited in the courthouse lobby. But they were not present due to a miscommunication, officials said. They met with Vanhoutte afterward.

The girl’s aunt declined to comment following the hearing.

The girl’s father is incarcerated, officials said in court. Her mother’s live-in boyfriend of father of two younger children “considers himself her stepdad,” Seidl said afterward. But he had no legal standing to assist the girl in court.

Van Houtte was also appointed as her temporary guardian ad litem.
