KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) – The mother of a 14-year-old girl assaulted and then fatally shot on the grounds of a Kansas City water park was in court Monday when three suspects faced a judge for the first time.

And their behavior revolted her.

“I didn’t see any remorse on the guys’ faces, which made it even harder for me and my family,” said Lashonda Kane, who lost her daughter, Alex, to senseless violence.

She said one of the defendants appeared to smirk at her during his court appearance.

“That was pretty hard to deal with. I don’t see how he thought it was funny,” she said.

Facing the suspects who allegedly brutally killed her daughter more than two weeks ago was difficult.

“It was devastating,” she said.

But she plans to attend every court appearance to ensure her daughter gets justice.

“There’s nothing that’s going to stop me from being there every time,” she said. “I will walk through with my child in my spirit.”

She said she hopes that Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker seeks the death penalty if the teens are convicted.

Isaac “Malik” Carter, 17, Ce-Antonyo Kennedy, 17, and Dominic McDaniel, 18, each are charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Since they don’t have attorneys yet, a judge entered a not guilty plea for them during Monday’s brief court appearance. The three are due back in court next month.

Each has denied any involvement in Alexis Kane’s murder and say they have alibis.

But Carter and Kane apparently had communicated on Facebook prior to her death and arranged to meet up, according to court documents. Alexis Kane got into a vehicle parked outside a convenience store on Blue Ridge Boulevard.

Surveillance cameras at Bay Water Park captured the moments where the three killers assaulted Alexis Kane and then two suspects took turns shooting her.

“It was for no reason!” Lashonda Kane said. “It was for no reason they took my 14-year-old child, for no reason, absolutely no reason.”

William Berry mourns his granddaughter’s death and struggles to understand why she is gone.

“My granddaughter didn’t do nothing to nobody. Fourteen years old, and her life is gone for a senseless killing. It’s something that you grieve every day,” he said.
