UPDATE: Marlin Police Chief, Darrell Allen, is in stable but critical condition after being shot in the head at a Temple night club, early Sunday morning.
According to officials with the Temple Police department, the shooting happened at 1:22 a.m.
They say Chief Allen was off-duty at the time of the incident. He was working as a security officer at “Laid Back Lounge II,” located at 301 East Ave B in Temple.
Temple Police Department Investigators and the Texas Rangers are actively working to gather evidence and interview patrons at the Laid Back Lounge. They have named Temple resident, 24-year-old, Derrick Wayne Gamble as the suspected shooter.
Gamble has been arrested and is charged with aggravated assault on a Peace Officer. He is currently in the Bell County Jail awaiting arraignment.
Officers say it all started, after an altercation between Chief Allen and Gamble. Allen was attempting to detain the suspect shortly afterward and was shot during the struggle.
Temple PD said Chief Allen’s treatment plan changed and he did not go into surgery. His condition is being monitored by medical staff.
The Temple Police Department is asking for prayers and support for Chief Allen, his family, and the Marlin Police Department.
This is still a developing story. We will bring you the latest as information comes in.
