Last night I had the opportunity to attend Lupe Fiasco’s Foundation M.U.R.A.L.’S second annual Celebrity Holiday Bake off. The event was held at the beautiful Soho House in Downtown Chicago. Guest judges included members of the cast of the NBC show Chicago Fire and celebrity chefs included rapper and Grammy nominee Lupe Fiasco, acclaimed Pastry Chef from Bravo TV’s Top Chef Malika Ameen, Curus Dabb, Shala, Isreal Idonije of the Chicago Bears, owner of Brown Sugar Bakery Stephanie Heart from the Food Network, and Steve Harvey’s personal chef Judson Todd Allen. The audience had the opportunity to sample pastries created by the two teams selected for the bake off. After careful deliberation and taste testing, the judges chose Isreal Idonije team’s twisted caramel sweet potato pie over Lupe Fiasco team’s warm chocolate crunchy fudge brownie. This event was so much fun and all proceeds raised benefited the foundation’s efforts to provide food, fresh vegetables, and healthy cooking classes to underserved neighborhoods.

Founded in 2009, M.U.R.A.L., Magnifying Urban Realities & Affecting Lives, is a uniquely interdisciplinary, grassroots-driven organization that works to inspire and unite Chicago communities and their youth by providing transformative resources and platforms that are in short supply or unavailable.

Specifically, the Foundation pursues three key initiatives — including food justice, the creation and implementation of hip-hop scholars, and youth empowerment funding — to demonstrate that equipping youth with the tools to discuss issues such as food access, health, violence and values can effect positive change for them and their communities.

The Lupe Fiasco Foundation provides healthy produce to people who live in the city’s “food deserts”. To promote food justice, the The Lupe Fiasco Foundation’s Block-by-Block program funds community-based workshops, campaigns and events that promote healthy eating in “food insecure” communities.

In 2014, the Lupe Fiasco Foundation provided fresh fruits and vegetables to over 500 families. With your help they can feed many more. Together we can provide healthy meals and bring hope to Chicago families that need quality food.
