wedding dress

So you picked spring as the season for your big day.  You are planning your wedding and you don’t have a thing to wear;  first let me start by congratulating you on your upcoming nuptials. You might need a little help finding that perfect look and you have no idea where to start.

I’m going to give you tips on how to pick that perfect dress, color choices and how to choose your silhouette.

I’ll give you a point of reference to start your wedding dress hunt. Finding the dress that you have envisioned yourself in your whole life seems more impossible to find as you get closer and closer to that big day. Finding that perfect dress with the right fit can be a bit nerve-racking.

VISION….. think about what you want to look like on your wedding day. Then envision which silhouette looks best on you.  You have to think of the fabric that you want to wear on that special day;  think of how you want the dress to flow. Do you want lace, beads or embroidery?  Write down the things you like because this will make things so much easier.

THE LIST …….start with what you want your dress to look like.  If you want to look like a princess, a runway model, or a celebrity on the red carpet,  know what you want.  Do you want sleeves, a long train or buttons down the back that bling; things like that.

Trying to flip though hundreds of bridal magazine and rows and rows of dress at the bridal shop will become exhausting after about 20 minutes…….. trust me.

All the dresses will just start to look-alike, so having a clear vision of what you want is very critical.

RESEARCH…..now that you have vision; it’s time to do a little work; check out gowns via the internet and Bridal magazines, Modern Bride, Bridal Guide, Perfect WeddiBrida, Press Bridal, etc. This gives you some knowledge beforehand so when you make that trip to the bridal shop you will have a clear vision and you won’t feel overwhelmed.

Know your shape and understand what best flatters your figure. Find fabrics that fit the season, look classy and feel sexy; Look at non-traditional dresses you can find a beautiful dress for half the price.

SILHOUETTES………Find what best flatters your figure so you can have the perfect dress. Look at photos of each type and find pictures of real women wearing gowns that you like so you will see how it looks on a regular body type as opposed to a model.

Now if you’re not sure what flatters your figure then let me give you a little help with that.

EMPIRE WAIST…..Your gown or dress the bottom would fall just below the breast not everyone considers this a silhouette but more of a waist line type.  This is a great choice for brides that are expecting or having a non-traditional wedding.  You must be cautious if you are top-heavy as this is not the silhouette for you, as this focuses all eyes to the top area. This way you can  Create an illusion of a fuller bust and take the attention off the waist and hips.

wedding dress

A-LINE…… this has a fitted bodice with a skirt that flares from the waist to form an “A” shape which is the best choice for fuller figure women or anyone that wants to hide lower body flaws. The Pear-Shape woman loves this silhouette because it highlights the narrowing of the waist line and Floats away from the hips and thighs.

wedding dress

SHEATHS….. this is for a straight-line look that will create curves where you don’t have them and this also flatters women with slim balanced figures but if you have a little something to hide, then this is not the silhouette for you. This type of dress is not forgiving at all.

Now if you are petite ……look for Trumpet, sheath and modified A-line gowns. Find a dress with a waist line just above your natural waist this will create an illusion of longer legs.

What type of wedding is this?

Know you circumstances ……there are many factors that dictate what type of dress is best appropriate, such as what season is the wedding in.  This way  you can choose the appropriate fabric type;  if it’s a spring wedding, you want to pick a lighter fabric something flowing, if you are having a formal ceremony this calls for a floor length gown, long train a very traditional dress. you get the point.

An Informal wedding is perfect for a dress without a train, strapless, Hi-Lo dress (shorter in the front long in the back) or a dress may be chosen with a sweep train (which is a train that barely sweeps the floor)…….This is also where you could add color or buy a ball gown instead of the traditional wedding gown.

COLOR…..White, Champagne, or Ivory….. The most traditional of wedding colors, white and various shades of it, is still the most popular.

Don’t be afraid of color, this year we are bringing color to the forefront as the ‘in-thing’ to do for a wedding. You don’t have to be so traditional, try something different.

Remember colors have meaning; they represent certain feelings emotions, and states of mind.

Cayenne, Orange, Yellow, Palomar, Sand, and Orchid are some of this spring’s colors. Whichever you choose do so with that in mind.

Go with a dress that is figure flattering and bold, don’t be afraid of color. Try different patterns and prints, if you really want to give people something to talk about.  It could be what makes your wedding the most talked about weddings this spring.

THE DRESS

 wedding dress

Choose a gown that’s less traditional better yet a dress that isn’t a wedding dress at all; how about a Channel, Ball gown or some other Designer dress. It doesn’t have to be a name brand dress as long as it’s the dress you want. In most cases the bridal shops my not have your size so that’s what makes buying a dress that isn’t a traditional wedding gown that much better.  Buying the dress from a regular store means you can take your dress home. You will save money buying your dress in this way. Remember if money is a problem, try renting or check with charities organizations that might be able to help.

In the end, go with the gown that you love.  If you find a dress that just speaks to you,  just buy it.  No matters the type of ceremonies just keep it classy and you will have no regrets.
