William Melendez was sentenced Tuesday morning for his involvement in a police brutality case that happened last year. The former Inkster police officer was convicted of assaulting Floyd Dent during a traffic stop last year. He was given a sentence of no less than 13 months to no more than 10 years in prison.
Before sentencing, Judge Vonda Evans called forward probation officer Eilea Murray to question her about her pre-sentencing report. Then, the court heard from Dent’s niece who read a statement on his behalf. Melendez also addressed the court before sentencing.
He said he was sorry to Dent and his family, and also to his family for the hardships in the last few months. He finished his remarks with a poem familiar to those in law enforcement called “The Final Inspection.”
Judge Vonda also spoke before the sentencing, saying Melendez and his officer were playing a “game” when they decided to pull over Dent.
“You forgot the eye of justice was watching. The dash cam designed to protect you – caught you. You knew better,” she said.
Melendez was found guilty of misconduct in office and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
The first charge carried up to a 5 year prison penalty and the second charge had a maximum of 10 years.
He was sentenced to no less than 13 months and no more than 10 years in prison on the first count, and was given 90 days credit for the second charge.
