A Merrillville resident was charged Friday in the brutal slaying of United Airlines flight attendant DeCarol Deloney-Cain, according to court records.

Damarius R. Wren, 18, faces a murder charge and is being held in the Lake County Jail without bail, according to court records. Wren is dating Deloney-Cain’s daughter.

Gary officers found Deloney-Cain’s abandoned car Monday morning in the area of 21st Avenue and Mississippi Street. They found in the car’s trunk Deloney-Cain’s decomposing body hidden beneath luggage. Her body had been tied with duct tape and wrapped in black plastic bags, according to the affidavit.

Deloney-Cain, 54, of Crown Point, died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma to her head, according to the Lake County coroner’s office. She was not identified until Wednesday though police knew the vehicle belonged to Deloney-Cain, according to the affidavit.

Deloney-Cain’s daughter said her boyfriend, Damarius Wren, had planned to rob her mother and hid the morning of July 3 in their Crown Point home. He placed a pillow case over Deloney-Cain’s head and began slamming her head against the basement stairs, according to the affidavit.

Wren grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Deloney-Cain multiple times, according to the affidavit. The daughter told police that she was scared and ran to an upstairs bedroom.

Two of Wren’s friends arrived at the house and helped wrapped Deloney-Cain in black plastic bags, according to court records. Guided by a GPS device police would later find, the group, including Deloney-Cain’s daughter, drove from Crown Point to Gary.

Deloney-Cain’s daughter said they stopped on a dirt road in Gary where she then got out of the car, according to the affidavit. Wren told her they tried to bury the car.

She told police that Wren’s friend, who had a gun, made her withdraw money from Deloney-Cain’s bank account using an ATM card, according to court records.

 

Deloney-Cain’s daughter initially told police she last saw Deloney-Cain on July 3. Her mother had told her she had to pay a bill and was then going to work on an international flight, according to court records.

However, Gary detectives learned from United Airlines officials that Deloney-Cain last flew July 2. Her next scheduled flight wasn’t until July 6.

Officials called the family when Deloney-Cain didn’t show up for work that day. It was the first time in 25 years that she had not reported for work.

On Tuesday, a friend of Deloney-Cain called police to report a suspicious stain on the carpet in Deloney-Cain’s basement. The next day, officers searched the home and found a blood-like stain in the basement and blood in a vacuum, according to court records.

Wren admitted to detectives that he was involved in the homicide, according to the affidavit.

Gary police Chief Wade Ingram said the homicide investigation is ongoing. The woman’s daughter had not been charged as of Friday.
