For years, CSUSM students have expressed the need to further diversify our campus community with the addition of an African American Greek organization.

After a prolonged push for this inclusion, the request is being answered.

On campus, students and various Greek organizations have been rallying about the importance of having an African American Greek presence in order to build a bridge between black students and their culture.

It was in the summer of 2014 that the Greek expansion was approved, and on Feb. 17, Student Life and Learning (SLL) finally authorized the accession of the first African American sorority.

Recently added to our campus, the African American-interest fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, will be joined by the likes of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

“I think the addition of Sigma Gamma Rho on our campus is a great step towards increasing diversity efforts on campus,” said Jamaela Johnson, Vice President of Student and University Affairs.

With the help from the Black Student Union, the African American Faculty and Staff Association (AAFSA) and other entities on campus, the hard work finally paid off.

With the addition of Sigma Gamma Rho, student demands for increased cultural diversity are being heard.
