Metro Police report the shooter at the Carmike Hickory 8 Cinema is dead.

The Nashville Fire Department confirmed that shots were being fired at the movie theater on Bell Road just before 2 p.m.

Police responded to a shots fired call about 1:15 p.m.

Dispatch confirmed three EMS units have been sent to the scene.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said the suspect entered the theater armed with a gun and a hatchet.

A South Precinct officer entered the theater where Mad Max: Fury Road was showing. There, he encountered the gunman in the projection room. The gunman and the officer exchanged gunfire.

A Metro SWAT Team later engaged and killed the gunman just inside the movie theater.

“We believe the imminent threat has ended,” Aaron said.

Aaron said the gunman had two backpacks on him at the time of the shooting. Crews are working to make sure there is no danger with those backpacks.

Brian Haas, spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department, said the gunman was also carrying pepper spray. Three people were injured from exposure to pepper spray, and one of those people also appeared to have superficial injuries that could have come from the hatchet.

Officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center confirmed no victims would be transported to the hospital.

Witnesses at a nearby business reported one person covered with blood.

The Ford Ice Center and The Global Mall, which are located near the theater, were placed on lock down during the active shooter investigation.

Ezell-Harding, a school located on Bell Road, was also on lock down.

Last month a shooter opened fire a movie theater in Lafayette, LA. The shooter killed two and injured eight before killing himself on July 23. Police said the 58-year-old gunman was armed with a handgun and acted alone.

In 2012, another man opened fire on a movie theater in Aurora, CO, killing 12 and injuring 70 more, in one of the largest mass shootings in U.S. history. The gunman, James Holmes, has been found guilty in the attack and is going through a sentencing trial to determine if he’ll receive the death penalty.
