Police say a New Orleans woman struck her 2-year-old grandson in the head with a kitchen knife during a fight with her ex-boyfriend inside a Central City home.

Police booked Monday (Dec. 16) Darnella Perkins, 38, on charges of cruelty to a juvenile and domestic abuse aggravated assault after they say she hurled a knife at her ex-boyfriend during a scuffle the two were having on Sunday. She missed her target and the knife hit her grandson, an arrest report says.

The arrest report says Perkins and the man were inside a house in the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd about 6:40 p.m. when the two began to argue. At one point in the argument, the man told police, Perkins picked up a knife from the kitchen counter and began swinging it at him several times. Perkins then reportedly threw the knife at him. And he ducked.

The 2-year-old boy, who was sitting on a sofa in the living room behind where the two were fighting, was struck in the left side of his head with the knife, the police report said. He was taken to the hospital where doctors treated him for the injury.

Reports show that the boy sustained a two-centimeter wide and one centimeter deep laceration on the side of his head from the knife and required one staple to close the wound.

Perkins is being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond, records show.
