Glenn Beck on Thursday said he “strongly” disagrees with the decision of the grand jury in New York not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the videotaped chokehold death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man.

“While I disagree with the protests and what they’re doing in New York, I strongly disagree with the decision,” Beck said on his radio program. “Here’s a guy who was not resisting arrest, was not being a jerk. The video is very, very clear. The police put him in a chokehold, threw him down. He has a heart attack and dies.”

“He’s crying out the whole time,” Beck’s co-host, Pat Gray, added. “Just heart wrenching to hear him say, ‘Please, I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.’ Over and over. Then he goes limp.”

Beck said it is important that the American people hear the rationale of the grand jury, because the officer’s actions seem “absolutely inexcusable.”

Beck added that Garner was stopped and eventually killed for selling untaxed cigarettes.

“It’s over cigarette money. It’s over tax dollars. This is the most obscene part of this,” Beck said. “If the guy was drug dealer, you would think, ‘Wait a minute. This guy is a drug dealer. You’re dealing drugs.’ This is over tax dollars. It’s obscene. It’s grotesque.”

“Did they murder him? No,” Beck added. “Was it [manslaughter]? It looks like it to me.”

Beck said it is important for conservatives to stand up against the grand jury’s decision in the Garner case. He added that the media will likely be surprised by his stance, but those who have been listening to him for years will not.

“If you want to have any credibility, you cannot lump Ferguson with this one,” Beck said. “This is the New York police completely out of control. They did not murder him, but manslaughter absolutely should have been considered. Why that wasn’t considered is beyond me.”

“This is the way Americans deal with injustice,” Beck added. “The system didn’t work here. Now let’s calmly and rationally say, ‘Why didn’t the system work? What were the instructions to the grand jury? …’ Because we’ve seen the video. Now explain to me how that’s not manslaughter. And if you can’t rationally explain it, or if it’s because of some loophole, we as Americans need to fix that loophole.”

But Beck said there is no excuse to shut down a city, burn businesses or destroy vehicles.

“Any God-fearing, decent human being that truly cares about justice and peace is not marching today,” Beck remarked. “They are reaching across the aisle with people they normally disagree with and saying, ‘Hey, this one we agree on. Now, how can we find justice here?’

Beck said America’s justice system isn’t perfect, but it is “the best system ever devised by man.”

“Name one better. I can’t,” Beck said with growing indignation. “You want it from Kenya? You want it from Germany? You want it from Russia? You want it from China? … This one sucks. I agree with you. Show me the one that’s better. When you show it to me, maybe you can convince me to go on that one. Right now, this is the best one in the world. So now let’s fix it, one case at a time.”

“You have to care about the truth,” Beck concluded. “You have to care about each individual case, and let each individual case stand on its own.”
