The officer responsible for attacking a black teenage girl on video in McKinney, Texas, has apologized for his role in the incident. Eric Casebolt has issued an apology through his attorney for his role in the melee that terrified a group of black teenagers at a pool party this week.

Meanwhile, civil rights groups are calling for Casebolt to be criminally charged for his behavior, and likely won’t be so quick  to forgive him for what he did that day. The lawyer representing the teen girl who Casebolt slammed to the ground says that his actions were excessive and that his decision to leave the force is not going to stop a deeper investigation.

Jane Bishkin, the attorney representing Cpl. Casebolt, says that the officer responded to two suicide calls that week, with one of them being fatal. The other involved a teen who was sent to the hospital. Bishkin claims that these incidents took an emotional toll, leading him to overreact on the day of the pool party.

“With all that happened that day, he allowed his emotions to get the better of him. Eric regrets that his conduct portrayed him and his department in a negative light. He never intended to mistreat anyone, but was only reacting to a situation and the challenges it presented. He apologies to all he offended,” Bishkin said.

Casebolt’s behavior caught on video went viral nationally, leading to outrage from those who felt that his actions posed a danger to the children and made a bad situation worse. He cursed at several of the teens and also pointed his gun at them as well.

Bishkin said Casebolt was not going after minorities in the video, and that there was one white girl he handcuffed who was not seen in the video. Casebolt’s attorneys say that some of the teens were instructing others not to cooperate with the police. His lawyers also say that the defamed officer plans to address the media later on this week.

Dajerria Becton, the young woman slammed by Officer Casebolt, has hired attorney Hannah Stroud. She says that this situation is far from over.

“Miss Becton attended a pool party to which she had been invited. She was not trespassing in any shape or form. She left the scene when she was asked to by the police officer. When she asked for her bag so that she could call for her aunt, who is her legal guardian, she was pushed to the ground, grabbed by her head and her face was shoved into the ground. She was then handcuffed, she was never arrested and she’s not been charged with any wrongdoing or with any offense,” Stroud said.

Stroud continued by informing the city that she plans to take more drastic action if necessary.

“It is our hope that the City of McKinney will do the right thing here, and we believe that they will. We are also ready to pursue the necessary courses or avenues if we have to. There are several and at this time we’re still fact-finding so we don’t know which avenues we will choose to go down,” Stroud said.
