Erykah Badu is being viewed in a new light at this time. As she hosted the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards, she implemented some funny bits in her routine just as many hosts of the various awards shows have done in the past. EarHustle411 sat in front of the television and watched Erykah Badu aka Badoula Oblongata, Cerebellum, Fatbellybella, DJ Lowdown Loretta Brown, She-ILL, and Manuela Maria Mexico…well whatever name she went by all we know is the Soul Train Awards was more than entertaining this year. She opened the show with an awesome performance while riding on the latest must have electronic item…the Hoverboard.
Naturally, there would be a short monologue before the real deal was set to begin. Erykah in her own funny way warmed up the audience to her way of doing things. She let the people know that the show was all about soul music and there will be no rap allowed, no red cups and mo more than 3 tattoos on the arms. Of course, the bit had begun, with mock calls from rappers asking why they weren’t allowed at the show. The Queen of Baduism took the bit just one step further, when the show is interrupted by a call from an unsuspecting party. Take a look :
Erykah’s bit set the tone for the rest of the awards show and her mock conversation with Iggy Azalea will be forever cemented in the minds of the Badu Tribe and as shocked as we were, it was really funny.
“Who is this? Iggy Azalea? Yeah, hey… no, no, no, you can come, ’cause what you doin’ is definitely not rap,”. ~ Erykah Badu
The performances were stellar, very crisp and clean. This year’s show we feel was well put together from beginning to end. Our favorite portion of the show was the Soul Cypher with Chrisette Michele, Lelah Hathaway, K-Ci and R&B Legend Eddie Levert and with DJ Lowdown Loretta Brown on the 1s and 2s. Mimicking the Hip Hop Awards Cypher, the Soul Cypher is definitely a keeper for future Soul Train Awards shows. Watch the Soul Cypher below:
Well if you missed the Soul Train Awards and all of its glory including awarding Jill Scott with the Lady of Soul Award, Babyface receiving the Legend Award and both performed like never before, thanked the fans for their support over the years and the finale of ChiTown’s own R. Kelly invited the viewers to a BBQ included with the infamous “red cups”…you really missed a great show.
Catch the encore on December 1, 2015. Share what you think about the show.
