EarHustle411’s In Music History: Bell Biv Devoe’s Debut Single “Poison” Turns 25-Years Old

25 years

2015 is bringing about some fantastic historical moments. February seems to be the busy month, not just because it’s Black History Month and it’s Grammy time but 2 of the music industry’s most successful artists are celebrating and shouting because singles that essentially took their careers to another stratosphere and thus sealing their position in music history.  EarHustle411 reported & celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Montell Jordan’s  “This Is How We Do It” on February 6, 2015.

While doing our research we found another group that had the 1990s in an uproar and every male keeping an eye out for the “girl with a big butt and a smile”!!  That’s right!!!…we are talking about none other than Bell Biv Devoe aka BBD.

BBD

The late 1980s to early 1990s was the beginning of the New Jack Swing era.  BBD came together after New Edition members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill departed to pursue solo careers.  Even though Ricky Bell, Michael Bivens and Ronnie Devoe hadn’t made plans on becoming a group, however it was at the urging of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis that they form a group.   THANK HEAVENS!!!…they agreed to because it was one of the best decisions they ever could have made musically.

“Poison” went to the #1 spot of the Billboard’s R&B charts and peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 chart. It’s no secret that “Poison” gets the crowd going in the clubs and for those who are true fans of BBD go through a nostalgic moment as soon as they hear “rat tat da tat da tat da tat tat” drum beat intro.

Check it out for yourself:

We would be out-of-order if we didn’t mention BBD’s energetic videos, fly gear and catchy lyrics they always displayed to give the group an edge over other recording acts who called themselves “the competition.”  In all actuality Bell Biv Devoe has always been in a class by themselves.  BBD’s Poison album quote is very clear “Our Music Is Mentally Hip-Hop, Smoothed Out On The R&B Tip With A Pop Feel Appeal To It!!”  (Don’t act like it was just us singing that line…LOL!!!)  The timelessness of Bell Biv Devoe will forever be “seared” in the minds and hearts of everyone who’s ever been privy to have listened to their work.

The group recently sat down with fellow artist MC Lyte on “Morning Cupdiscussing the group’s accomplishment with “Poison.”  EarHustle411 fans and all the like can celebrate with Bell Biv Devoe on Saturday, February 14, 2014 “Centric Live: Bell Biv Devoe” 9P|8C as CentricTV honors BBD and their accomplishment as they perform “Poison” and a few other hits recorded LIVE. Check your local listings for channel placement or check them out on stage in your local area.

EarHustle411 and the writing staff could not be more proud of Bell Biv Devoe on this momentous occasion, 25 years of success with a single that had stood the test of time.  Each time it’s played even the current generation of music fans have grown to love it.  We are so excited for them and we wish BBD continued success with their musical journey and personal careers.
