In the Pullman neighborhood, parts of a community are becoming a team with the newest Bulls player leading the charge.

Dwyane Wade joined his mother, Pastor Jolinda Wade, and his sister Tragil Wade invited hundreds of kids and their families to celebrate the future Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center Saturday. Named for Dwyane Wade’s grandmother, who’s now 97, the community center will provide a new place for the community to come together.

“It’s just a vision and a dream come true,” said Pastor Jolinda Wade.

That vision began long before the tragic murder of wade’s cousin, Nykea Aldridge, just weeks ago on Chicago’s South Side.

“Out of this the light shines a little brighter on my mother and brings up the things that we want to do here,” said Dwyane Wade.

“Because of the family hurt that we went through, we’re now the victims, and I feel that we have an even stronger heart to get out there and show the positivity,” said Tragil Wade, who helps run the Wade’s World Foundation.

And that’s how a sometimes fractured community can start to be made whole by those willing to step up to the challenge.

“It’s been a tough summer in Chicago, it’s been a tough time for my family of late but to be here today and see smiles on everyone’s faces… It’s amazing,” said Dwyane Wade.
