The incident happened on Tuesday night when the boy’s mother returned home from work and found her boyfriend, Matthew Gallagher, 36, giving the child CPR.

The boy was rushed to a local hospital where doctors removed the small octopus lodged in the boy’s throat. The octopus’ head was about two inches in diameter. The boy also had multiple facial injuries, police told KAKE.

Police Lt. James Espinoza said Thursday the boy has been upgraded to good condition and doesn’t show signs of long-term injury caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain.

Gallagher was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of child abuse, according to the report. He has since been released.

Officers told KSNW the octopus appeared to be intended for sushi.
