A Downers Grove physician has been charged with possessing and disseminating child pornography, DuPage County authorities said Friday.
Edward J. McMenamin, 67, appeared in bond court Friday morning, and Judge Elizabeth Sexton set bail at $500,000, prosecutors said.
McMenamin was taken into custody Thursday evening at his residence in Downers Grove shortly after authorities issued an arrest warrant, prosecutors said.
Downers Grove Police Lt. Mike Willison said none of the charges against McMenamin were related to his medical practice.
A spokesman for Advocate Health Care released a statement Friday that said McMenamin joined Advocate Medical Group in early 2014 but has been suspended “based on the information currently available.”
“We sincerely regret any concern this has caused his patients,” the statement read. “We take this situation very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation. …To our knowledge, Dr. McMenamin has not been involved in any inappropriate acts with his patients. We will continue to cooperate with the authorities in their investigation.”
The website for a family medical practice in Downers Grove also said McMenamin had been practicing there more than 30 years.
Downers Grove police began an investigation of McMenamin earlier this year after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The investigation, which later included the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office and the Department of Homeland Security, led to McMenamin, who authorities say had numerous images and videos of child pornography in his possession.
He has been charged with five counts of disseminating child pornography and 12 counts of possession.
