DJ Father Shaheed, a member of the Trenton hip-hop trio Poor Righteous Teachers born Scott Phillips, died in a motorcycle accident on Memorial Day.

Shaheed, 45, was riding his motorcycle on the Sprain Brook Parkway in New York when another motorcyclist allegedly crashed into a car, causing the car hit Shaheed, making him crash into a tree, reports BET and Westchester News 12.

Poor Righteous Teachers are known for their hit song “Rock Dis Funky Joint,” from their 1990 debut album “Holy Intellect.” In 1991 the group released the album “Pure Poverty.”

Wise Intelligent — Timothy Grimes — emcee for the group, talked about Shaheed, a producer and DJ, on Twitter yesterday. The third member of Poor Righteous Teachers is Culture Freedom.

“Poor Righteous Teachers would like to thank everyone from around the way, country and world for their condolences, thoughts, prayers and well wishes concerning the passing of our dearest brother, friend, companion, comrade and fellow teacher — Father Shaheed,” Grimes said. “This hurts beyond the head, heart and stomach.

This pain cuts deep into the souls of who we are. We were more than just a ‘rap group’ and Shaheed was more than just a member and brilliant DJ/producer. He was a great human being, a loyal friend, a great father, a great brother, a damn good son, and a committed husband.”

A Twitter account for Public Enemy also mentioned Shaheed’s passing on Facebook: “The PE family sends condolences out to the family and friends of DJ Father Shaheed from Poor Righteous Teachers, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.”

In 2011, Star-Ledger music critic Tris McCall said Poor Righteous Teachers was part of the early ’90s New Jersey hip-hop explosion, a period when “it was possible for a parochial fan to imagine that the Garden State was becoming the center of the rap universe.”

Poor Righteous Teachers producer Anthony Depula, who went by the name Tony D, or Harvey Wallbanger, died in 2009 after a car accident.
