Depaul University Cancels Event At Trump Tower In Chicago

DePaul University College of Law is paying to get out of a contracted event at Donald Trump’s Trump Tower in Chicago after so many students voiced their disapproval of the venue.

In an email sent Tuesday, associate dean of student affairs Michael Burns personally thanked students who stood against going to the billionaire turned presidential hopeful’s Chicago hotel for the university’s annual Barristers’ Ball.

“After discussion throughout the day, the College of Law administration and [Student Bar Association] leadership have decided to cancel the Trump Tower contract and select another venue,” Burns wrote. “It is important to us all that this event be held at a venue that all of our students feel welcome and comfortable at.”

Burns went on to say the college is willing to front any cancellation fees associated with getting out of the deal that caused disdain to so many law students.

While DePaul’s spokesperson Carol Hughes did not say the unexpected change was directly sparked from the opinion of Trump himself, she said the university stands behind the students’ stance.

“[The decision was to] select a venue in which all of our students will feel welcomed and respected; a venue that is consistent with our university values and commitment to serve its diverse student body,” Hughes said.
