There’s a first time for everything—nearly two decades after making his debut, Tyrese has scored his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with his latest album, Black Rose.

Released on July 10 through Tyrese’s own imprint Voltron Recordz, the indie project shifted 86,000 unit equivalents (including streaming) during the week ending July 16. It outsold Tyrese’s last album, 2011’s Open Invitation, which moved 76,000 in its first week.

Back in 1998, Tyrese made it onto the charts with his first hit “Nobody Else.” Since then, he’s charted 20 separate hits—this includes “Shame” off of Black Rose, which is currently sitting at No. 13 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

Tyrese took to social media to thank his fans for their support. “We did it!! We made a statement….. R&B is still very much ALIVE,” he declared. “And R&B consumers are still very much here you were just waiting on #BlackRose.”

Black Rose is the singer’s sixth album, three of which have cracked the top 10. It toppled Meek Mill’s Dreams Worth More Than Money, which has topped the chart for the past two weeks—that release sold 63,000 copies last week. Taylor Swift fell to No. 3, selling 62,000 copies of 1989.

If you had any lingering doubt that Tyrese is a bankable star, remember that he co-starred in the year’s highest-grossing film globally, Furious 7.
