A little girl was killed and her mother injured in a shooting on Cleveland’s west side late Sunday night.

Officers were called to the 12800 block of Crossburn Avenue for shots fired. Once on scene, cops found five-year-old Jermani Brooks and her 33-year-old mother, Noni, with gunshot wounds to the head.

EMS rushed the victims to Metro, where the child died from her injuries. 19 Action News has learned Noni was recently upgraded to fair condition.

Family members are overcome with grief, and demanding justice.

Titi Brooks released a statement on behalf of the entire family:

The family would like privacy at this time during the mourning and loss of a beautiful child, Jermani Brooks whom life was taken at such a young age. Please keep the family in your prayers for the recovery of her mother Noni Brooks. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the person of interest PLEASE come forward.

The preliminary investigation reveals that Noni, little Jermani, an infant and the Noni’s boyfriend were seated inside a red SUV when a man exited a green SUV and fired multiple shots into their vehicle. After shooting into the vehicle, the suspect fled the scene in the green SUV.

A short time later, officers found the suspect vehicle in the 12000 block of Kirton Avenue.

The investigation led officials to the 3500 block of Riverside Avenue, where officers checked for the suspect with the Division’s SWAT unit and Negotiation Team. The suspect was not found after a thorough search, and remains on the loose.

The city of Cleveland released the following statment concerning the shooting:
